Those three need very different handling on the Central Coast. A deleted folder may still be sitting on the disk, a dead laptop may hold a healthy drive, and a ticking drive needs to stay off until it has been assessed.

Yes. Recovery apps installed onto the same drive can write over the very files you want back. A quick call first only costs you a few minutes.
Deleted files often stay on the disk until something new takes their place, so the less the computer is used, the better the position you are in when we assess it.
Please do not. A ticking or grinding sound usually points to a mechanical problem, and each power-up can scrape away more of what is still readable.
Unplug it, put it somewhere safe, and tell us what it did. We will explain the realistic paths, including a specialist lab, before anything is tried.
Not before we look, and nobody honest can. Physical damage, encryption and overwritten data all limit what is reachable.
After the assessment you hear where things stand, what each option costs, and whether it is sensible to spend more. If the answer is no, we say so plainly.
That is usually the last part of the job. We set up automatic backups to the cloud, an external drive, or both, depending on how you work.
Then we run a test restore with you watching, so you know the copy is real before you ever need it.
